NOTES from the DIRECTOR

The Methow community is showing its true colors once again.  This past month has included a cacophony of unexpected changes, resourceful solutions, impressive collaborative efforts, rainbows of inspirational acts and love of community.

Thank you to the many MHT supporters who have been reaching out to voice support for our long-term mission during this uncertain time. Until a few weeks ago, MHT had a steady strategic plan, a reliable timeline for final 2020 home construction and closing on sales for 8 eager home-buyers, and emerging fundraising goals to help fulfill the growing need for future housing in the Methow Valley.

And then, MHT experienced what every individual, non-profit and small business in the community has experienced - the sudden adjustment to working remotely, the need to develop contingency plans for a huge spectrum of unknowns, and over the course of the days and weeks that followed (as the dust settled)…… reminders of what is most important.

Right now, dear MHT supporters, we all need to have our compasses oriented toward securing the most basic needs for community members during these acute weeks of this crisis. We tip our hats to the frontline healthcare providers, agile educators, health and human services providers, community organizers, and small business resource providers that are burning the midnight oil to ensure that everyone in the Methow Valley gets the basic support they need.

Meanwhile, at MHT we remain focused on our critical role in the Methow Valley (one that will only increase due to the economic impacts of COVID-19): developing and maintaining secure affordable homeownership opportunities for local families.  AND, ensuring the long-term security of housing in our community.

We are experiencing some construction delays (as we protect the safety of workers and the entire community), but we will “get ‘er done” as soon as possible thanks to the dedication of committed construction crews, a diligent board, and our very endlessly committed staff.  Additionally, in collaboration with MVLTR, we are now hosting a housing security resource page for all community members (see below).

Because of the financial and personal stresses caused by COVID-19, we check in with current MHT homeowners on a regular basis to see how they are doing, and to offer to connect them with resources.  Here is a rainbow of inspirational quotes, provided by Erika Krumpelman, MHT Stewardship Director, from our calls this week.

"Our home brings us freedom and security. Having a home is the one thing that grounds us right now. It's really comforting to have a home that we can call our own."

"Our home brings us an extra element of grounding and security. We would feel a lot more stressed right now if we were renting."

“We are thankful to be homeowners right now. There are more resources for homeowners than there are for renters. The stability has been a huge relief.”

“I’m thankful I have an income. I donated to the school. I have extra food in my freezer to share if my neighbors need help.  I’m much more comfortable now that I have my own home and have no more fear of being homeless.”

Thank you for making secure housing possible for more of your fellow community members!

With gratitude,

Danica Ready, MHT Executive Director
